B.J. Thomas (September 24, 2021): B.J. Thomas has one of the most distinctive voices in American pop music — a reassuringly masculine timbre conveyed with a smattering of unique embellishments that represent a distillation of the most influential genres in pop culture.

April Verch Band (Oct. 8, 2021): For over two decades the fiddler, singer-songwriter and step dancer April Verch has been recording and captivating listeners worldwide. Verch’s signature sound blends together regional Canadian, American old-time, bluegrass, country and Americana, resulting in a well-rounded tour-de-force of traditional sounds.

The California Guitar Trio (Nov. 20, 2021): The universe of guitar knows no boundaries for this trio. Since 1991, the group has enthralled listeners with a singular sound that fearlessly crisscrosses genres. The trio’s questing spirit drives it to explore the intersections between rock, jazz, classical, and world music. It even throws in the occasional surf or spaghetti Western tune for good measure.

Julian Bliss Septet (Feb. 18, 2022): Julian Bliss is one of the world’s finest clarinettists excelling as a concerto soloist, chamber musician, jazz artist, masterclass leader and tireless musical explorer.

Canadian Brass (Mar. 10, 2022): With an international reputation as one of the most popular brass ensembles today, Canadian Brass has truly earned the distinction of “the world’s most famous brass group". Each of their concerts will show the full range from trademark Baroque and Dixieland tunes to new compositions and arrangements created especially for them – from formal classical presentation to music served up with lively dialogue and theatrical effects.

Via Italia: Musical Roads Leading to Italy RECORDING (online)

New Spire Arts is pleased to present a recording of Saturday April 24's performance of Via Italia: Musical Roads Leading to Italy.
From the 15th Century through the 19th Century, musicians and composers throughout Europe sought to emulate the musical language originating in Italy. In this program, we perform works of German composers of the 18th Century created in a florid “Italian” style. Written for a combination of instruments: violin, oboe, recorder, cello and bassoon, you’ll hear music of Fasch, Telemann, Pepusch and, yes…Vivaldi.

Neither Wolf Nor Dog Movie Night (in person)

New Spire Arts is proud to screen Neither Wolf Nor Dog, a record-breaking and independent film. Run time: 1 hour 50 minutes.
Adapted from the acclaimed novel by Kent Nerburn, this funny and deeply moving film follows an author who gets sucked into the heart of contemporary Native American life in the sparse lands of the Dakotas by a 95-year-old Lakota elder.

Kent Nerburn (Christopher Sweeney), a good-hearted, white American family man and writer, receives a mysterious call from a distant Indian reservation regarding an oral history book he made with Red Lake Ojibwe reservation students in northern Minnesota. Despite misgivings, Kent travels across America’s northern plains to arrive at the bleak, poverty-stricken reservation deep in the high plains of the Dakotas. The old man, Dan (Dave Bald Eagle), who lives alone in a clapboard shack back in the hills with his only real companions—his dog, a close friend named Grover (Richard Ray Whitman) and his granddaughter, Wenonah (Roseanne Supernault)—interrogates Kent as to his motives for working with Indian people.

Once satisfied he is not a turquoise clad “wannabe” spouting Indian philosophy, Dan recounts the story of American history from the Native point of view. As the stories pour from Dan, Kent’s understanding of the world is turned upside down. An inanimate landscape comes alive, and a history he thought he knew is called into question.

COVID-19 Impact

Like many small theatres across this nation and around the world New Spire Arts has been adversely impacted by the global pandemic. We have been shut down completely and then allowed to open at a small percentage of our capacity at various times throughout this past year. Our ability to present live performances has been drastically limited.

We continue to stay on top of the latest government mandates and are very hopeful that the distribution of effective vaccines will begin to put this trying experience behind us. If you are able, we ask that you consider making a donation to help support New Spire Arts during this very challenging time. Every donation helps ensure that we will be able to continue to bring exciting live performances to our beloved Frederick community. Thank you for supporting local performing arts!

Not goodbye, but see you later.

Now that Governor Hogan announced Phase 3 in September, we are moving to some limited in-person performances. You may have already noticed our Road to Hamburg concert scheduled for Sunday, November 8 at 3 PM which will be a great opportunity for all of us to put down the screen and experience live music the way it was meant to be! Also, we are partnering with the other two theaters here in Frederick's Theater District, the Weinberg Center for the Arts and the Maryland Ensemble Theatre in a live event. This time it will feature The Seldom Scene and Hogslip String Band, live at the Fairgrounds Drive-In also on a Sunday, November 15 at 4 PM.

Here's a little teaser: look for an announcement out soon on our 2021 Concert Series. I'm sure you will be familiar with many of the artists we have lined up. Tickets will at first be sold on a subscription basis at a price that's a real steal. If you haven't already signed up to receive out newsletter, now is the time to do so to receive advance notice of subscription sales.

I look forward to seeing you at both events!

Sincere regards,

Gerard Gibbs
